May 1 (UPI) -- A small aircraft crashed overnight in central Texas, killing five people, local authorities said Friday.
The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Thursday in the Wimberley area, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said in a post on Facebook. Wimberley is about 25 miles southwest of Austin and straddles the Blanco River.
"The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 421C, was confirmed to have crashed with five individuals on board," the release from Becerra said. "Authorities have confirmed that all five occupants lost their lives as a result of the incident."
The names of the victims were not released.
Authorities said that a preliminary investigation revealed the Cessna "was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact." There has been no evidence of a mid-air collision.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to lead the investigation.
