6 Colors that Aren't Good For Bedrooms

Planning a bedroom refresh? If painting is the plan, skip the loud colors. You want a chill vibe, not chaos. Before grabbing a brush, check out the shades that can ruin a good night's sleep.

Orange

A bright orange wall might be fun and cheerful in the kitchen, but is not a great choice for the bedroom. Such a color would be overstimulating and not conducive to a good night’s rest.

Neon

Avoid anything neon. In general, you should avoid painting bedrooms in bright colors. This tropical blue green probably looked amazing on the paint chip, but it may make your bedroom a bit chaotic.

Yellow

Yellow is the color of the sun, and you definitely don’t want to simulate sunshine in your bedroom all night long. A vibrant yellow will not have the calming effect you’d be looking for in the place you rest your head at night.

Black or Dark Gray

Even though it might seem like dark colors would help you rest, experts say black is a bridge too far. Consider a softer gray for a lighter, yet restful, approach.

Purple

While purple is definitely statement-making, you should avoid this energetic color in rooms used for rest and relaxation. If you like the color palette from which purple comes, consider a soothing blue instead.

Bright White

There are about a million shades of white, many of which would be fine in a bedroom, but you’ll want to avoid a cold, stark white that will feel glaringly unpeaceful. Look for something that verges on ivory or cream for a soothing feel.
