For the most part, pests just want the same basic things we do: food, water and shelter. If your home offers these necessities, all sorts of insects and critters are happy to take up residence in your spaces.

Hungry critters will invade your home if they discover you’re a bit untidy when it comes to leaving crumbs on the floor or on the countertops. Wipe everything down thoroughly, and also be sure you carefully seal up packages of cereal, crackers and the like. Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
Bugs and rodents will also make themselves at home if you provide a consistent source of water. Dripping faucets and sources of standing water can attract mosquitos, termites and mice. Humid basements are an attractant, too.
Piles of cardboard, rags and other "stuff" are welcoming to critters looking for shelter. If you’ve been meaning to clean out the garage or basement, do it now, or you’re inviting unwanted guests to take shelter in your collections.
Pets can bring pests into your home. Use flea and tick medicine on your animals to keep them, and the rest of your home, free from those critters. Cats generally take care of their own grooming, but you might need to bathe your dog fairly often to wash off any other critters he might carry inside.
Gaps and cracks in your home makes it easy for bugs to get in. Seal and caulk even the tiniest of holes to keep critters out. Places to check: siding, the foundation, windows, doors and the roof.

Pests love a full garbage container, so be mindful when your kitchen trash is overflowing. It might be a pain, but get up off the couch and take the trash outside. It’s better than waking up to a bunch of mice feasting in your kitchen.
