Don’t Ever Put These Items in the Dryer

Air drying is the better option for certain items that should not be put in the dryer because the heat and tumbling action can harm them.

Wool

Wool and cashmere are highly susceptible to shrinkage if they're tossed in the dryer. Socks, sweaters, scarves—if they’re made of wool, air dry them to keep them from shrinking and to protect their delicate fibers.

Faux fur

Never dry faux in the dryer. The fake stuff is often attached with glue, which can melt in the dryer and separate from the garment. Real fur should always be professionally cleaned.

Delicate Lingerie

Underwear items can become misshapen if subjected to the tumbling nature of a dryer. Additionally, these items sometimes contain elastic and spandex, which can break down in high temperatures.

Shoes and Slippers

While some types of shoes can safely go through a machine wash cycle, it’s best to let them air dry. Slippers, in particular, often have a rubber sole that is glued to other components. Both the sole and the glue can be compromised in a dryer’s high heat.

Embellished Items

Clothing items that are embellished with beads, sequins or other decorations should be air dried. A rough tumble in the dryer can cause decorative elements to become damaged, fall off or snag on other items.

Reusable Bags

Those canvas bags that you take to the grocery store every week definitely need to be regularly washed, but it’s best to air dry them, rather than put them in the dryer. They’ll likely shrink and lose their shape if you do.

Outerwear

While it’s ok to dry (on low or medium heat) some types of jackets, such as puffy or fleece types, other types of outerwear should be air dried. For example, peacoats and blazers will likely be ruined if you wash them yourself rather than going to the cleaners.
